Is it the beginning of the end for Apple?

Apple recently announced that it is going to launch an iPad mini to tackle the Kindle Fire… something that Steve Jobs was strongly against doing.

It got me thinking – strong, visionary brands like Apple are built by setting the trends, not worrying about what competitors are doing. Or rather, by looking at what competitors are not doing for their consumers, and then doing it better. So, is there a genuine consumer need for a smaller iPad, or is that need already being well-served by the iPhone?

Is it the beginning of the end for a trendsetting brand like Apple when it starts to worry what the competition is doing? I’m worried that it might be (but really hope it isn’t!).
